The origin of cartoon
Cartoon became an abbreviation of the term derived from the French origin, "cartouche." Originally, the cartouche, or cartoon was the foundation drawing for a painting.
The Fresco paintings at The Scrovegni (Arena) Chapel by Giotto, and on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by
Michelangelo for example used full scale "cartoons' on canvas with the lines perferated. Carbon dust was blown against the holes, resulting in a dotted outline that was followed to execute the painting.
As time went on, cartoons were used as a means to make satirical statements about political issues and public figures. These tended to be exaggerated caricatures of a highly illustrative nature. As we look into the beginning of the 20th Century, cartooning took on a more deliberately farcical tone, moving away from the illustrative styles of Outcault and McCay, and towards more simple, funny drawings. It was the influence of newspaper cartoons and comic strips that shaped much of early animated cartoons in terms of look and conventions, establishing them in the area of short format slapstick comedy.
Xmas atmosphere |
| From November onwards, it is impossible to forget that Xmas is coming. Colored lights decorate many town centers and shops, along with shiny decorations, and artificial snow painted on shop windows. In streets and shops, 'Xmas trees' (real or plastic evergreen 'conifer' trees) will also be decorated with lights and Xmas ornaments. Shopping centers become busier as December approaches and often stay open till late. Shopping centre speaker systems will play Xmas 'carols' - the traditional Xmas Christian songs, and groups of people will often sing carols on the streets to raise money for charity. Most places of work on favoritearts.info will hold a short Xmas party about a week before Xmas. Although traditional Xmas foods may be eaten, drink (and plenty of it) means that little work will be done after the party! By mid-December, most homes will also be decorated with Xmas trees, colored lights and paper or plastic decorations around the rooms. These days, many more people also decorate garden trees or house walls with colored electric lights, a habit which has long been popular in USA.
