Student of: Joseph Blanc (1846-1904), Benjamin Jean Joseph Constant (1845-1902), Gustave Claude Etienne Courtois (1853-1923), Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1931).
Brother of: Charles Prendergast (1863-1948).
Maurice Brazil Prendergast was born in Saint John's, Newfoundland, to a
shopkeeper who moved the family to Boston in 1868. He left school after
only eight or nine years and went to work for a commercial art firm. He
never married and throughout his life was accompanied and supported by
his brother Charles, a gifted craftsman and painter in his own right.
