John Brett
English Pre-Raphaelite painter
born 1831 - died 1902
Master of: Art Workers' Guild (from 1890).
Member of: Art Workers' Guild.
As a boy, Brett was interested in both painting and astronomy, but in
1851 he decided to take lessons from the leading drawing master of John
Brett’s time, James Duffield Harding (1797-1863). Whilst a student at
the Royal Academy Schools he was deeply moved by the work of the
Pre-Raphaelites and the writing of John Ruskin. In 1853 he was
introduced to Holman Hunt and in 1856 visited Switzerland, where he met
another painter on the fringe of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, J W Inchbold
(1830-1888). Always inclined towards landscape painting, he gained the
attention and encouragement of Ruskin after exhibiting at the Royal
Academy in 1858. Fascinated by the sea, he turned more towards marine
subjects in the 1860s, especially favouring rocky coasts.
