Bouguereau, Adolphe-William
(1825-1905)
William-Adolphe Bouguereau (the November 30, 1825 to August 19, 1905) was a French painter school. William Bouguereau (boo-guh-roe pronounced vill-yam) was a traditionalist whose realistic genre paintings and mythological themes were modern interpretations of traditional topics with a heavy emphasis on the female body.
Although he created an idealized world, his almost photo-realistic model was popular with the wealthy patrons of art. He was very famous in its time but today his themes and technique generate relatively little attention compared to the popularity of the Impressionists. William-Adolphe Bouguereau was born in La Rochelle, France November 30, 1825, in a family of wine merchants and olive oil.
He seemed destined to join the family business but for the intervention of his uncle Eugene, a Catholic priest, who has taught classical and biblical subjects he and assured Bouguereau to go to school. Bouguereau showed artistic talent early on and his father were convinced by a client to send it to Beau-Arts de Bordeaux DES School, where he won first prize in figure painting for a description St. Roch. To earn extra money, he designed labels for jams and preserves.
